Background:

Built in 1977, the school occupies an open-plan site. Its intake comprises an 'absolute cross-section of social groups' and children with a full range of abilities attend the school. 'Good provision' is made for the more able children. Ashby Hill Top puts an 'emphasis' on the 'expressive arts'. Peripatetic music staff are employed to teach at the schools and there is a brass band and orchestra, as well as drama and dance groups. The school enters many art competitions and is 'well known' locally for its art expertise. As part of their information and communications technology (ICT) education, years 3 to 6 can access the internet. The subject is taught throughout the school and all staff are trained in ICT skills. Ashby Hill Top has a community programme, inviting elderly residents into school 'on a regular basis', while the Friends of Hill Top organise events and raise funds to finance school projects. Pupils support local charities and have an on-going links with Bulgarian orphanages.
