Background:

Built in 1972, the open-plan primary serves the northern edge of Market Harborough, with a catchment area consisting mainly of owner-occupied housing. Two classoom extensions were added recently to deal with rising numbers. The school is set in 'extensive' grounds which include a large playing field and playground with climbing frames. 'Wide-ranging' extra-curricular activities can include netball, athletics, table tennis, short tennis, French, recorder, scrabble and chess. There is strong provision for pupils with special educational needs (SEN), including a SENCO and a well-trained group of support staff. The children participate in fundraising activities for charities such as the local children's hospice 'Rainbows', Comic Relief and the Blue Peter Appeal. The school enjoys a 'very good reputation' in the local community and positive relationships exist between Ridgeway and local business, schools and service. An 'active' parent-teacher association raises substantial funds for the school. The school was recently awarded a DfEE School Achievement Award for raising standards significantly.
