Background:
Founded in 1990, the 'popular and lively' school occupies an attractive semi-open-plan building with a number of linked mobile classrooms. Facilities include a library, computer suite, science and technology area, hall, kiln, parents' room, aviary, three playgrounds and a large grassed area. Four Plus children have a separate classroom with their own playground. In addition to a 'broad, balanced and relevant' curriculum, the school has a reputation for 'excellent' art teaching and older children take part in an 'art carousel'. Children are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular music, with a recorder club in Years 3 and 4, and liaison with Leicestershire Arts for lessons in violin, cello and clarinet. They also have the chance to take part in sporting opportunities such as netball, cross-country, gymnastics and rugby. Parents run a Saturday morning football club for all children from Years 2 to 6. Other extra-curricular clubs include chess. Special events include visits to the school by musicians, artists and dance troupes and children see at least one play a year. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 have the opportunity to sleepover at school for one night and those in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to visit Beaumanor or Gilsland for an extensive residential visit. Children are also encouraged to work cooperatively in a team in events such as technology challenges, rugby, games and the school fun day. The school benefits from an 'excellent' governing body and an 'active' parent-teacher association.Clubs providing before- and after-school care for 40 children operate from 7.50am to 8.50am and from 3.15pm to 5.45pm. 'We wish to prepare our children for those opportunities, challenges and responsibilities which they will meet throughout their life, whilst encouraging all round development of each child'.
