Background:

The school was first established in 1856 by the Rosminian sisters as a school for the poor. Originally named St Mary's, pupils were from Catholic households in the parish and were accommodated in one classroom. At a later date, the Rosminian fathers built a church in Shelthorpe, named Sacred Heart, however children from this parish continued to attend school at St Mary's. In 1986, a new one form entry school was constructed next to St Mary's church and this was followed in 1995 by the building of second primary school in the Sacred Heart parish. Sacred Heart Catholic Primary is now a 'thriving' school which draws children from within the parish and also neighbouring villages. Extra-curricular activities include athletics, chess, choir, football, instrumental tuition, Italian, netball, quick cricket, swimming, tennis, French and short tennis. The school employs a part-time special educational needs (SEN) teacher, who works very closely with class teachers in preparing individual education programmes and also liases with parents.
