Background:
Mayflower Primary opened in 1995 in buildings which had previously housed a junior school and which had been refurbished and extended to accommodate nursery and Key Stage 1 pupils. Most of the children come from ethnic minority families and for many English is not the mother tongue. Staff are available who speak languages which are common in the local community. Boys and girls are given equal opportunities to participate in all sports activities and professional coaching is provided by Leicester City Football Club and the Leicester Riders Basketball Team. Children in Years 1 and 2 are taken to Evington Baths for swimming lessons. There is a small school choir and the chance to learn recorder, keyboards and violin, and a variety of day visits is organised to compliment the curriculum. Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to go on an extended field visit, usually somewhere in the county, for up to five days. Charity fundraising takes place at least once a year for a charity chosen by the school council.
